The Institute of Sociology at the Academy of Sciences is the leading non-university basic research institution in the Czech Republic. It is engaged in research on contemporary society and in post-graduate education in the field of sociology. On the research agenda are the analysis of long-term social processes in Czech society in the context of European integration policies, and the development of a knowledge-based society and human, social, and cultural capital. The Institute conducts empirical surveys, comparative research studies, case studies, exploratory research and public opinion surveys. It employs modern qualitative and quantitative research methods, and builds on findings, approaches and methods of related scientific disciplines such as, economics, political science, law, demography, social geography and gender studies. The Institute regularly conducts research studies for the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) and the European Social Survey (ESS).

PhDr. Zdenka Mansfeldová

Zdenka Mansfeldová heads the Department of Political Sociology and is deputy director at the Institute of Sociology at the ASCR. Her academic background is from the Faculty of Philosophy at Moscow State University and Charles University Prague. She has been visiting researcher at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB), the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen, and at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellowship at Chuo University in Tokyo. She has specialized in sociology and political sociology, in particular on the study of the functioning of modern democracies and their institutions, political and non-political forms of interest representation.

Petra Rakušanová Guasti

Petra Rakušanová Guasti is senior researcher at the Department of Political Sociology at the Institute of Sociology ASCR. She is enrolled in a postgraduate programme in sociology organized jointly by the Charles University Prague and the Institute of Sociology ASCR, and in a postgraduate programme in political science at the Jean Monnet Centre for European Studies at Bremen University, with the research project ‘Citizenship, Publics and the Constitution for Europe: The Czech Republic, Germany, Latvia and Poland in European Integration’. Her research concentrates on the functioning of modern democracies and their institutions, political and non-political forms of interest representation and the issue of citizenship.
