The Mannheim Center for European Social Research (MZES) of the University of Mannheim is one of the leading social science research institutions in Europe. Research at the MZES displays particular strengths in empirical-analytical approaches to European integration and EU multi-level governance as well as in the application of a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. The MZES is involved in several international research networks and hosted the Network of Excellence CONNEX (Connecting Excellence on European Governance).

Prof. Berthold Rittberger Berthold Rittberger is Chair of Political Science and Contemporary History at the University of Mannheim. He has written broadly on EU integration and constitutionalisation, new institutional theory and the democratic quality of the EU. In his prize-winning book Building Europe’s Parliament: Democratic Representation Beyond the Nation-State, he has explored the empowerment of the European Parliament since the early days of European integration. Dr. Arndt Wonka Arndt Wonka is Postdoctoral Researcher at the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) and co-project leader at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research. In his PhD dissertation from the University of Mannheim he analyzed the tension between non-majoritarian and political dispositions within the European Commission as well as the Commission’s role in EU legislative politics. His main research interests are institutions and legislative politics in the EU and political interest intermediation by political parties and other societal actors both in the EU as well as comparatively.
