Book presentations: Learning from the EU Constitutional Treaty The book Learning from the EU Constitutional Treaty: Democratic Constitutionalization beyond the Nation-State, by Ben Crum (co-leader of RECON's WP 2) will be presented at two occasions in December 2011. A first presentation will be held in Brussels on 5 December 2011 hosted by the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS). Richard Corbett, member of Van Rompuy's Cabinet, will act as a discussant. A second presentation will be held in The Hague - in Dutch - on 13 December 2011 hosted by the Wiardi Beckman Stichting. More information

Spinelli Debate: European Stories The book European Stories: Intellectual Debates on Europe in National Contexts, edited by Justine Lacroix and Kalypso Nicolaïdis within the framework of RECON's WP 5 - Civil Society and the Public Sphere,will be presented and debated at a conference organised by the SpinelliGroup in the European Parliament in Brussels on 15 June 2011, at 18:00-19:30. Seminar: Cuando los ciudadanos dicen "no" On 17 September 2008, the University of León hosted an outreach seminar around RECON's work packages on civil society and the public sphere (WP 5) and on the political economy of the EU (WP 7). The event was structured around a presentation of the results of the research project 'Building the European Union’s social constituency', synthesized in the book Y por fin somos europeos, in which RECON researchers played a central role, as well as the impact these findings have on ongoing RECON research. The event was attended by a select number of key Spanish journalists and opinion-makers, including Miguel Ángel Aguilar and Lourdes Pérez. More information and programme

Seminar: The fate of the Constitutional Treaty   At the EU Summit in June 2007 European leaders agreed on the outline of a new Reform Treaty to replace the Constitutional Treaty. After intense rounds of negotiation, this last-minute deal was deemed a success for the German presidency. But are the changes real or merely symbolic? On 17 September 2007, ARENA invites you to a seminar with policy adviser and political economist Stefan Collignon and legal scholar Agustín José Menéndez presenting two different views on the simplified treaty.
